What is a waterproof LED strip light?

To begin with, it's important to understand what a waterproof LED strip light is. It's essentially a flexible printed circuit board that has a row of LED packages mounted on it, which are designed to emit light. However, what sets a waterproof LED strip light apart from other LED strips is its minimum IP65 ingress protection rating.

What is an IP Rating?

IP stands for” Ingress Protection”, and it refers to an item's ability to withstand exposure to solid objects (such as dust) and liquids. The IP rating consists of two numbers, with the first number indicating the level of protection against solid objects, and the second number indicating the level of protection against liquids. LED soft ribbons/LED strips have gained popularity due to their flexibility and are often used as exceptional decorations in various settings such as residential, commercial, and photography studios. However, due to their sensitivity to humidity, it is important to consider waterproofing when installing LED strips in wet or humid areas like bathrooms, kitchens, yards, or swimming pools.

While it is easy to find IP-rated LED ribbons in the market, research shows that most products are designed for common lighting applications, with little consideration given to lighting quality. Through experiments conducted on high CRI + IP LED strips, we observed that the spectrum shifts significantly after the protection coating is applied. This is unacceptable to our customers who demand color accuracy.

At YUJILEDS®, we provide IP65/IP67 solutions that allow for the use of LED strips in moist or dusty environments. We optimize the protection coating material and tune a special spectrum to match it. The eventual result comes with no difference compared to other YUJILEDS® high CRI LED products.

Yuji team has developed a spectrum shift theory for the coating material and implemented technical controls to ensure the shift is stable and consistent. For the LED component, a customized spectrum has been created to match the shift. The result is that our high CRI LED strip appears no different, despite the LED inside the coating no longer having the original high CRI spectrum. We have conducted tests on the YUJILEDS® IP65 / IP67 high CRI flexible strip(see Figure 1), and it comes with YUJILEDS® 3rd generation chromaticity bin which ensures even better consistency control on this strip.
